An island community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State - Akugbene is just at the brink of collapsing into the river.
Reports have it that Perhaps, the ecological disaster facing the people of Akugbene Community would have been lesser if the contracts awarded by NDDC for erosion control were executed.
Reports also reveals that several projects were allegedly awarded which were not carried out but the contractors.
A shore protection job has been allegedly awarded and the contractors have since received huge amount of money, yet with nothing to show.
In 2014, NDDC awarded a N809,998,050:00 contract of Land Reclamation/Sand filling of Akugbene Town (Lot 6) to FEMSBASE INT'L LIMITED, this project it is still yet to be executed. On the 18th day of December, 2014 FIRST MARINE & ENGINEERING SERVICES LTD was awarded the contract of Land Reclamation/Sand filling of Akugbene Town (Lot 10) with original contract sum of N807,154,125:00 but still not executed yet.
In all these contracts, the contractors may have well received a fabulous amount as mobilization fee. Don't be too surprise to hear that these jobs have been completed on paper without even getting started in reality.
