The director of South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority says that former president Jacob Zuma will be prosecuted on 16 charges of corruption.
The National Director of Public Prosecution Shaun Abrahams announced today at Pretoria media press briefing, that Zuma will face 16 count charges including fraud, corruption, racketeering and money laundering.
“After consideration of the matter I am of the view there are reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution of Mr Zuma on the charges listed in the indictment. ”
"Zuma will face racketeering, corruption, money laundering and fraud charges all of which can carry lengthy custodial sentences on conviction".
“ I am of the view that a trial court would be the most appropriate forum for these issues to be ventilated and to be decided upon. "75-year old Jacob Zuma resigned as president last month, after he was ordered to do so by his party, the African National Congress. The charges stem from a $2.5 billion government arms purchase in 1999, when Zuma was deputy president. Zuma was elected president in 2009.
